Figured out how to leverage hotel shuttle to get me back to airport so I could catch a BART to get me downtown. Got to ride a combination of underground and surface trains as well as Bus system. Panhandling is rampant on trains. Lot of interesting techniques from waiving eviction notices needing just a few more dollars to keep babies from being thrown out onto street, to giving away single packets of tissues if you could afford donation...
Homeless tents lined many underpasses and many blanketed people huddled in doorways. This is a city with many challenges.
Spent most of the day on trains or on foot. Feet a little sore so don't plan to do a lot of pounding pavement again until I start riding. Wandering around I tend to forget how much time I spend upright without taking a break. Although, I did manage to do some snacking in China Town, at the ferry terminal, and in a Peet's coffee shop. My feet may hurt but I didn't starve.
Tomorrow, Friday, Matt and John arrive. The America by Bicycle staff arrive and we begin bike re-assembly and registration.
