Short notes as need to rest for tomorrow's big day.
Really beautiful weather today. Rather scenic as we rode along an impressive network of bike trails through some farmland, woodland and wildlife preserves. John, an avid ornithogist, stopped frequently. He record sightings of certain birds to an app he has. It updates information to a shared database used by other birders. It lets other folks know where a Yellow Billed Magpie was spotted.
He's a pretty good (ok, very good) cyclist and as Matt and I rolled along he would catch up and continue on with us until the next sighting. Bike trail took us 30 miles or so to our first (only) SAG stop of the day at Lake Folsom...Yes we passed the noted prison. It was very imposing with razor wire along a long stretch of fence over craggy terrains.
Just prior to SAG, we had to "bike hike" around a couple rock slides that blocked the trail. It was a little tricky with bike cleats on, but we just stayed focused and no one slipped or fell.
After we refueled, we continued to find that most of the 2500' of climbing were all in he last leg. Just a long continuing climb. We all kept a good pace and once in Auburn we stopped in a bike shop to pick up some supplies (T-Shirts, Bike Jersey, CO2 cartridges), and catch our wind. That last bit of climbing into Auburn we'll repeat about 6 times tomorrow. I'll be up at 4:30 to catch the 5:30 breakfast as we ride starting at 6:00.
Really gotta run. Early Route Rap tonight then we walk to dinner (suspect Mexican). Chinese buffet last night was decent. I enjoyed it and the company. Not a bad few day. Looking forward to more.
